I'm sure it's a good idea to try to get your customers to avoid FTP. Many people would be glad of that.
However, IF I am correct, many of the larger hosting services do not allow fopen, which means the customer has to hunt around for a problem resolution, and then install manually. That hunt is not necessarily quick, and it's certainly not painless. As this could well be a customer's first interaction with ThesisReady, you naturally want it to be as painless as possible. May I suggest you first get the new customer to check if they can do an fopen? (No, I don't know how you would do that!). Then if fopen is allowed, they can be pointed to your existing set of instructions, which are very detailed, and all should be well. If, however, fopen is not allowed, then you could refer them to some detailed instructions on manual installation. This would be much more helpful than trying to solve it through a forum post (which I note has been viewed quite a few times, so it's not a unique occurence). This would make the user experience much more pleasant. I have been very tempted, on more than one occasion today, to simply scrap the whole installation and choose another supplier of Thesis Skins. I may not be the only one. |
